With two years of anticipation under our belts, we finally saw the return of the Dutton family in a new episode of “Yellowstone.” Season 5 part 2 premiered Sunday, Nov. 10, answering some of our biggest questions.
Perhaps the biggest question is how John Dutton would be written off the show after Kevin Costner announced he would not be in Season 5 part 2 of “Yellowstone.” That plot line, and everything that followed, are recapped below to catch you up before a new episode on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount Network.

“Yellowstone” Season 5 Part 2 premiere recap:
The series returned with Beth and Kayce Dutton pulling up to their father’s governor mansion, which was surrounded by emergency crews and caution tape. Once they got inside, the siblings found John Dutton laying on the bathroom floor, next to his blood and a hand gun. Although distraught, Beth was immediately confident that John did not kill himself as it looked. She thought her brother Jamie was to blame. Beth then called her husband Rip Wheeler to come home, as he was moving Dutton cattle to Texas to save them from a spreading illness.
While Kayce investigated and talked with the police, they told him they didn’t have any security footage due to a power outage in the neighborhood the night before. However, they believed John’s death was a suicide and there was not foul play.
Later in the episode, we found Jamie Dutton distraught. Through flashbacks, we learned it was not him who pulled the trigger, but someone his lover, Atwood, hired.
One of these flashbacks showed Atwood planning the execution with a man who described the staged suicide as the “highest reward with the lowest risk.” Before leaving, Atwood told the man to do it. When Jamie found out what happened, he went to Atwood crying, telling her that he only mentioned the possibility of hiring killers – he didn’t say to do it.
Atwood tried to reassure him by telling him, “Lions die in the jaws of younger lions, and you are the younger lion. This is your kingdom now.”
The episode ended with Beth and Kayce plotting revenge against their brother Jamie and Atwood. Rip arrived after his long drive from Texas and embraced Beth.
The next new episode of “Yellowstone” airs Sunday, Nov. 17, at 8/7c on Paramount Network.
In episode 10, “The Apocalypse of Change” Beth comes to a chilling realization. Kayce reaches out to an old friend in search of information, and Jamie meets with Market Equities.
